MOUNT VERNON — Philip A. Dial, 89, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at the Emeritus at HillenVale in Mount Vernon.

He was born June 15, 1923, in Gambier, Ohio, to the late Harrison and Winifred (Hardin) Dial. Phil was a retired major in the U.S. Air Force where he had served as a fighter pilot of a P51 Mustang in China and Burma during World War II. He retired as a rural mail carrier in Knox County. Phil was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge of Mount Vernon, Mount Zion Lodge 9 F&AM and Aladdin Shriners. He enjoyed lawn bowling, golf, playing cards and fishing.

He is survived by a son, Philip David (Toni) Dial of La Verne, Calif.; a daughter, Connie (Devin) Cline of Mount Vernon; a grandson, Christopher (Heidi) Cline; a great-grandson, Ethan Cline; special niece, Phyllis (Harry) Griffith; other nieces and nephews; and special friend, Katie Keller.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Dial; and a brother, James Dial.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where friends may call two hours prior. The Rev. Gerald Bell will be officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
