GAMBIER — Nelson G. Reed, 96, of Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at the Autumn Health Care in Mount Vernon.
He was born June 23, 1916, in Washington, D.C., the son of Edward O. Reed and Grace I. (Nelson) Reed. He attended Lehigh University where he played left guard on the football team and graduated in 1937 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. After four years with Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co. in Milwaukee, Wis., he served in Europe as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Ordnance Department during World War II from 1941 to 1946. After his enlistment he returned to Allis Chalmers and worked five years as a turbine designer.
On Oct. 26, 1946, Nelson married Marjorie E. Kraemer of West Allis, Wis. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1951 where Nelson worked in the rotating machinery design section of the Cooper-Bessemer Corp. Nelson was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and he earned an Ohio Professional Engineer License in 1956.
Nelson was active in his pursuit of outdoor and civic interests throughout his life. Thirty years of sailing on the Great Lakes was his hobby. An avid sailor on Lake Erie, he took extensive solo trips throughout the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean often recruiting family and friends as crew to share in his adventures. In addition to sailing, his other favorite outdoor activities were skiing, hiking and bicycling. He served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, was a docent for the Knox County Historical Society, was active in the Sub-Alpine Hiking Club, and he was often sighted on the Kokosing Gap Trail riding a bicycle of his own design. For over 60 years, he was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
He is survived by his son, Edward J. Reed of Evanston, Ill.; his daughter-in-law, Wendy Reed; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Abigail Reed; and his niece, Claudia Chernow.
Besides his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie E. Reed; and his sister, Edna Groves.
A memorial service will be held Monday beginning at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 200 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, with the Rev. George Reed, O.S.L. officiating.
