HOWARD — Robert Enloe Buckingham, 80, of Howard, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 2, 1932, to Enloe and Florence Buckingham of Newark.
On Dec. 28, of this year, Bob would have celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his loving wife, Wilma (Barrick). Bob was a wonderful husband and father who spent his life putting his family first.
He is survived by his wife, four sons, Randy (JoAnn) and Jeff (Donna) both of Howard; Robert (Brenda) of Frazeysburg; and Keith (Brenda) of Howard; two sisters, Doris (Harold) Carroll; and Ruth (Jim) Clark both of Newark; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces; and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers. Jim and John; and a sister, Mary.
In his early years Bob played sixman football, baseball and was a stand out in basketball at Bladensburg High School, where he graduated. He led the county in scoring; averaging 18 points per game. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served his country proudly. An avid sports enthusiast, he coached many youth league teams in Newark and helped start junior high football at East Knox in 1974. Bob retired from General Electric in 1995 and had previously worked at Continental Can for several years. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon and one hour prior to services Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Evangelist Dave Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
