MOUNT VERNON — Mary Elizabeth Gehres Deeley, 93, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at the Emeritus at HillenVale.
She was born July 10, 1919, in Mount Vernon, to the late Charles and Marguerite (Allen) White.
Mary graduated in 1941, from Ohio Wesleyan University, earning a B.A. in English. She later served as a school teacher in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., New Orleans, La., Mount Vernon City Schools, Fredericktown and East Knox. During WWII, Mary served as a Red Cross nurse in Korea and director of the Officers Club in Seoul, Korea. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, past president of the Psi Iota Xi and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon.
She is survived by her daughter, Bina Jean Gehres of Cranston, R.I.; a son, Hewitt Charles Gehres of Jupiter, Fla.; nephews, Peter White of Shoteau, Mont.; Chuck White of Greensboro, N.C.; nieces, Jody White of Greensboro, N.C.; and Sandy Briggs of Hinton, Va.; stepdaughter, Jane (Dr. Don Greer) Carr of Boerne, Texas; stepdaughter-in-law, Rebecca Deeley.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Freeman Gehres; second husband, Dr. George Deeley; stepson, Dr. William Deeley; brother, Dr. Charles A. White; and a sister, Barbara Shehee.
Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to Hospice of Knox County.
