MOUNT VERNON — George Wendell Streby, 94, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
George was born July 31, 1918, in Fredericktown to George E. and Burdell (Long) Streby.
He graduated from Fredericktown High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and a master’s degree from New York State University. George was retired as a teacher and administrator for the Ventura California Board of Education.
George enlisted in the U.S. Marines in May 1941, and served in New Zealand during World War II.
He was a former member of the Batemantown United Methodist Church; a life member of the National Education Association and the PTA; and was a charter member of the Association of California School Administrators.
Surviving are his brother, Dean (Jane) Streby of Fredericktown; nieces, Laurie Stelts, Joni Rhoads, Carole Casto; and nephew, Mike (Wendy) Streby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna M. Streby; and a brother, Richard O. Streby.
A private burial will be in Forest Cemetery at Fredericktown. A service celebrating the life of George W. Streby will be Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at The Living Center, 201 N. Main St., Mount Vernon.
