MOUNT VERNON — William L. (Bill) Buckingham, 91, of Mount Vernon died suddenly Monday morning, Jan. 21, 2013, at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 22, 1921, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Guy and Stella (Blubaugh) Buckingham.

William was an Army Veteran of World War II earning the rank of Sergeant. He retired from Nationwide Insurance as an Underwriter and Underwriter Manager in the Commercial Division. William was a faithful member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. He graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1939 and Miami University (Ohio) in 1951. William was a very kind and generous person who helped many people. He was also a great lover of pets, especially his dog, Sandy. He was a great husband, father and grandfather.

William is survived by his loving wife of over 50-years, Sally (Eberhart) Buckingham; his four children, Bill (Yvette) Buckingham Jr., Mary (Scott) Kirkpatrick, Charlotte Buckingham and Theresa (Troy) Cline; and three grandchildren, Sarah Buckingham, Matthew Kirkpatrick and Alexander Kirkpatrick.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother, John Buckingham; and sisters, Louise Hyatt and Irene Doup.

The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. A vigil service will be held following the visitation at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Homer Blubaugh as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Mount Vernon with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
