MOUNT VERNON — William D. “Bill” Littlejohn of Mount Vernon, formally of Georgetown, Texas, and Worthington, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully Jan. 7, 2013, at the age of 88 in Mount Vernon.
He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., Dec. 22, 1924, to the late Douglas and Helena (Fischer) Littlejohn.
Bill married Vivian Strum on July 8, 1950, at Judson Memorial Baptist Church in Minneapolis. Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a draftsman and safety engineer for Ashland Chemical prior to his retirement in 1984. Subsequent to his retirement, Bill and Vivian moved to Georgetown, Texas, where Bill became a school bus driver for the Georgetown School District. In his spare time he enjoyed golf, gardening and playing bridge. In earlier years, he was active in the Methodist Church choir. Most recently, Bill attended the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon.
Bill will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, loyal friendships and his love of music. Most important to Bill was the quality time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Vivian A. (Strum), of 57 years; infant daughter, Susan; and his brother, James Littlejohn.
He is survived by his children, Joanne and her husband, Dale Schaefer, of Overland Park, Kan.; and Patti Coates of Mount Vernon; five grandchildren, Kari (Evan) Duede, Bill and Tim Schaefer, Jennifer (John) Kohl and Tyler Coates; two great-grandsons, Jackson Schaefer and Henry Kohl; along with his sister, Jessie (June) Early of Wheaton, Ill.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Autumn Health Care.
A memorial service will be held at the Gay Street United Methodist Church on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., with the Rev. Denise Marikis officiating. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Worthington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Knox County.
