UTICA — A funeral service for William L. Simmons, 81, of Utica, will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Utica United Methodist Church, 626 North St. with Pastor Ken Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in Simmons Cemetery, Utica. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, at Utica United Methodist Church.
Bill died Jan. 31, 2013, at Knox Community Hospital, Mount Vernon. He was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Cleveland to the late Floyd L. and Harriet D. (Sharp) Simmons.
Bill was a member of Utica United Methodist Church, Utica Sertoma, Utica Historical Society, Utica American Legon, Utica Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, Aladdin Shrine, Utica Shrine Club, UTK Club and The OSU Alumni Association. He served as a board member for North Fork Local School District and retired as Utica High School principal in 1986. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 37th Division, Military Police and was a Kentucky Colonel.
Bill was inducted into the Hall of Honors for North Fork Local School District, the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, the Licking County Task Force on Aging Hall of Fame and he received the Service to Mankind Award from Sertoma.
Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane (Dunlap) Simmons; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Diane Simmons of Danville, David and Joan Simmons of Utica; five grandchildren, Chris (Shelly) Lepley, Alanda (Daryl) Mezie, Michael Simmons, Jessica Simmons, and Mathew Simmons; four great-grandchildren, Layne and Reese Lepley, Aaron and Avery Mezie.
