MOUNT VERNON — Barbara Joan Oliver, 65, of Everview Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Dec. 18, 1947, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Dr. Leroy and Constance (Spies) Schumaker. Barbara graduated from Canton Glenwood High School and The Ohio State University with a degree in Journalism and Public Relations. She owned and operated several businesses in the Knox County area: Oliver Photography, Oliver Communications and (OCS) Oliver Career Solutions. Barbara was a member of the AMVETS Post 95 Women’s Auxiliary and the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene.
She loved the Cleveland Indians since early childhood. She also loved following her son’s and grandchildren’s activities, be they sports, music or educational endeavors. She enjoyed listening to oldies (’50s and ’60s) music and could boogie, twist and dance with the best of them. Barbara was an avid reader, especially the Bible, and loved to research topics and issues related to the Bible. She wrote poetry, and loved writing in general. Barbara was an accomplished photographer and loved working with abstract photo art.
She is survived by her husband, George; sons, Doug and Scott; granddaughters, Gabrielle, Courtney, Margaret, Sophie; grandson, Chase; and great-grandson, Jameson.
Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene, 16001 Glen Road, Mount Vernon, where a memorial service will be held Friday beginning at 10 a.m., with Pastor Robert Morrison officiating. The family will observe a private burial at a later date.
