LANCASTER — Melva M. Dorton, 84, of Lancaster, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at The Inn at Fairfield Village.
She was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Brookston, Ind., to John T. and Bethel B. (Maxwell) Hughes. Melva was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, past president and honorary member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Mary Martha Circle of the church, member and past president of the Town and Country Garden Club, 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Indiana, 15-year volunteer with the Knox Community Hospital Auxiliary serving 13 of those years as treasurer of the Gift Shop, and a member of the Women’s Association at the Mount Vernon Country Club.
She is survived by one son, Jeffrey (fiancée Becky Berns) Dorton of Hamilton; one daughter, Amanda (Glen) Greenwood of Lancaster; grandchildren, Adam (Lesley) Greenwood, John (Alicia) Greenwood and Sara Lee (Luke) Pennington; great-grandchild, Gabriel Glen Greenwood, and a second great-grandchild due in August; sister-in-law, Fern Hughes; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen Dorton, in July 2010; son, Gregory Alan Dorton; grandson, Eric Greenwood; and brother, John E. Hughes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 222 N. Broad St., Lancaster, with the Rev. Matthew Richardson officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the Dorton family.
