BUTLER — Bessie L. (Mazzagotte) Mortimer, 86, of Butler, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 8, 2013, in Knox Community Hospital following a long illness.
She was born March 10, 1926, in Akron, to Stanley and Eva (Hodges) Mazzagotte, and graduated from Palmyra High School in Portage County in 1944. In 1945, she married Robert A. Mortimer, the son of Frank and Ruth (Maier) Mortimer. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Feb. 3, 2013.
In addition to caring for her family of three boys, Bessie helped manage the family dairy farm in rural Knox County. Bessie was a talented cook and baker, especially when it came to her homemade pies. She enjoyed flower gardening, knitting and crocheting, and reading.
A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, Bessie is survived by her husband, Robert A. Mortimer of Butler; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert S. and Barbara Mortimer of Butler, Wesley A. and Susan Mortimer of Butler, and Steven R. and Mary Mortimer of Bellefountaine; nine grandchildren, William R. and Bobbie Mortimer of Butler, Andrew S. Mortimer of Butler, Wesley Jr. and Brenda Mortimer of Waynesfield, Tonya and Gary Green of Butler, Chris and Kristy Mortimer of Mount. Vernon, Carrie and Matt Harriman of Ontario, James Mortimer and Amanda Lipscomb of Perrysville, Lisa and Joel Dennis of East Hampton, N.Y., and Heather and Pierre-Henri Mortimer-Charoy of Paris, France; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, George Mazzagotte of Pensacola, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and stepfather, Steve Belinski.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Bellville Snyder Funeral Home is assisting with funeral arrangements.
