ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — William S. “Bill” Bumpus Jr., 87, of Saint Petersburg, formerly of Mansfield and Mount Vernon, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Bill was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Mount Vernon to William S. Bumpus Sr. and Goldie (Atkinson) Bumpus.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Bill retired from General Motors in Ontario, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, Judith (Chantler) Bumpus; son, Frank Bumpus of Johnson City, Tenn.; daughters, Kathleen “Kathy” Yates of Hickman, Ky., and Christeen “Chris” Mullins of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bumpus; son, Steve Bumpus; brothers, Darrell Bumpus and John F. “Jack” Bumpus; and sister, Mary Belaver.
Friends may call Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 1 p.m., and burial with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at Mound View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
