MOUNT VERNON — Iada F. Burris, 91, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.

Iada was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Mount Vernon to Thomas and Rozella Burris, and had spent her lifetime traveling and working with her church as an organist and music teacher before retiring back to Mount Vernon.

She was an active member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. She enjoyed music, her church family, playing cards especially Skip-Bo and Phase 10. She was taught to play the piano and organ by her father and to sew by her mother, and was known as an expert seamstress. Iada was an avid reader and always said she had read more books from the Mount Vernon Library than anyone.

She is survived by her nieces, Marilyn Scott, JoAnn Parker and Nancy Gentile, all of Mount Vernon; and her special friends, Rebecca J. and Dr. James Swetlic of Mount Vernon.

Besides her parents; Iada was preceded in death by her sisters, Thelma McClain, Pauline Gilliland, Waneta Huffman and Genva Conners.

Per Iada’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held at the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Denise Marikis officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Iada to the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
