MOUNT VERNON — Samuel G. Mearns, 86, of Mount Vernon, passed away at his residence on Feb. 19, 2013.

He was born July 22, 1926, in Camden, W.Va., to the late Ray and Eva Mearns. Sam was a World War II and Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.

Sam is survived by two daughters, Sue (Dave) Garrabrant of Croton and Connie (Ron) McCready of Mansfield; a son, Ron Mearns of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, Travis Reynolds, Troy (Danielle) Reynolds, Tracey (Bryan) Zink, Randy Garrabrant, Kelsey Garrabrant, Ray Mearns, Zach McCready, Caitlyn McCready; four great-grandchildren, Lane Reynolds, Tory and Taylor Reynolds and Brooklyn Anne Zink; two sisters, Mart Cunningham and Lela Paige, both of Baltimore, Md.; many close friends, neighbors; and his favorite companion, Scruffy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Mearns; a son, Doug Mearns; sisters, Lois Mearns and Colleen Thompson; and a brother, Carl Mearns.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens, with Mr. Lynn Beverage officiating. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
