GRANVILLE — Ruth Irene Grove, 104, of Granville, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Kendal at Granville.
Miss Grove was born June 16, 1908, in Nevada, Ohio, to the late James Harrison and Acsah Eugenia (Humiston) Grove.
Miss Grove received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Bowling Green State University. She taught for eight years in Carey, at the Crawford School near Columbus; and retired after 30 years from the Mount Vernon School District where she taught second grade.
Miss Grove assisted and taught in Sunday School classes at First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon where she had been a member since 1931. She enjoyed taking care of all types of plants, roses and her flower garden. She was well known for her baking specialty, angel food cakes. She had traveled extensively in Europe with her sister, Rebecca, and brother and sister-in-law, Dr. James and Dorothy Grove. Her varied and many hobbies included copper enameling, chair caning, knitting and wood carving.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Grove of Granville; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rebecca Grove, in 2011; a brother, James “Jim” Grove, in 2009; and a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Earl Driver.
At her request, no calling hours or service will be observed.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Salvation Army, 250 E. Main St., Newark, OH 43055.
The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
