UTICA — Helen Cryder Joseph, 91, of Utica, passed away Feb. 27, 2013.
She was born March 31, 1921, to the late Earl and Ad Hugh Cryder in Huntsville, Ohio.
Helen met her husband, Fred Joseph, at Ohio State University 4-H where they were students. During World War II, Helen was a home economics teacher and home demonstration agent. When Fred, a Navy pilot, returned from four years on duty, they were married Dec. 1, 1945, beginning 65 years together.
While raising eight children on their farm near Utica, they traveled and camped throughout Ohio and across the U.S., and she returned to teaching and completed 25 years in the Utica school system. After retirement in 1987, she and Fred enjoyed many wonderful winters camping in Florida. In addition to being a prolific knitter and baker, she was a loving mother to her large family, the joy of her life. She was a lifelong Ohio State fan, member of Utica United Methodist Church and Knox County Farm Bureau.
Preceded in death by her husband, Fred; son, Stephen; and grandson, Christopher. Survived by her children, Dr. Bob (Linda), Sally (Tom Meets), Becky (Doug Harman), Dr. Laura (Jim Matter), Dave (Rachel), Dan (Tammy), Tim (LeeAnn); daughter-in-law, Linda Finan Joseph Esq.; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Also survived by one brother, John (Jo) Cryder of Jolliest, Ill., and sister-in-law, Carolina Joseph of St. Louis, Mo.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Utica United Methodist Church, 626 North St., Utica. Visitation is Monday at 10 a.m. at the Utica UMC followed by service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Ken Kelley officiating. Interment to follow in the Bell Church Cemetery.
