CENTERBURG — Paul “Rex” Altizer, 80, of Centerburg, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Ann’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Tazewell County, Va., to the late Louie Sr. and Carrie (Beavers) Altizer. A graduate of Sparta High School in 1953, he went on to serve in the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. Returning from the service he would marry Judy (Hulse), his beloved wife of almost 57 years. Together they raised a wonderful family and shared in the joys of life.

A true patriarch, he will be remembered for his work ethic, strong will and love of family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 57 years: Judy, children: Dr. Stan (Nancy) Altizer of Broadview Heights, Cheryl Altizer of Austintown, Treva (Ken) Gabriel of North Lima, David (Brenda) Altizer of Centerburg, Ryan (Heather) Altizer of Sunbury; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Warren (Peg) of Reynoldsburg, Dewey and Norm (Susie) Altizer, both of Centerburg; sisters, Mary (Jim) Stiffler of Sparta and Betty (Jim) Mossholder of Mount Vernon.

He was also preceded in death by sister, Lucille Kaufman; and brothers, Louie “Jay” Jr. and John Altizer.

Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to 11 a.m. Tuesday funeral services at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61 in Sunbury. Burial will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery with military honors.
