MOUNT VERNON — Joan Cassell, 83, of Longitude Drive, Mount Vernon passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Newark, to the late Russell and Mildred (Zumbro) Morin.
Joan was a graduate of Newark High School, Stephens College and The Ohio State University (cum laude). She taught in Worthington, South Euclid-Lyndhurst and East Knox Schools as well as at Central Ohio Technical College. Joan was a member of Lucy Knox Chapter of DAR, the Review Club since 1957 and the First Congregational United Church of Christ since 1956.
She is survived by her husband, C. Arthur Cassell; three sons, Jeff (Terri) Cassell of Mount Vernon, Brian (Linda) Cassell of Ben Lomond, California, Alan (Traci) Cassell of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren, Michelle (Jason) McDonald, Grant (Katelyn) Cassell, Emily Cassell, Carter Cassell; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Levi McDonald; her brother, Captain, USN (Ret.) Gene (Betty) Morin of Greenville, S. C.; and her sister-in-law, Jean (Dick) Slinkman of Bemidji, Minn.
Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her infant son, Douglas Lee Cassell.
Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. The service will be held Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
