MOUNT VERNON — Nora E. “Sissie” Short, 90, of Mount Vernon and formerly of Avondale, W.Va., passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Ohio Eastern Star Healthcare Center being the last member of her generation.
She was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Bartley, W.Va., to the late Elder Thomas F. Adair and Mary (Mooney) Adair. She worked 32 years as Postmaster of Avondale. Sissie was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Shortridge, W.Va., 50-year member of the Iaeger/Bradshaw Rebekah Lodge, West Virginia Postmaster Association and the United Mine Workers of America. She attended Iaeger High School.
She is survived by three children, David (Charolette) Short of Centerburg, John Lafayette (Beverly) Short Jr. of Mount Vernon and Mary (Gary) Keene of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Jennifer Gilliland, Michael Short, John Chris Short, Brian Short, Rebecca Stevens and Angelene Spaulding; great-grandchildren, Dillon, Sarah, Jason, Sierra, Delaney, Jillian, Kyrsten, Ashtyn, Lana, Jenna, Alexander and Jacob; nieces, Sherry Harley and Sandra Dorton; nephew, McGennis Adair Jr.; special niece by marriage, Eunice Short Addair; and many other loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lafayette Short Sr.; four brothers, John, Fred, McGennis and Farley Adair.
Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W.Va., where a funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. Elders Elza Mullins and Darrell Mullins will officiate. Burial will follow in Shortridge Cemetery in Garland, W.Va.
