MOUNT VERNON — Donna Sue Umbaugh, 59, of Mount Vernon, passed peacefully from this life Feb. 20, 2013, at a Columbus hospital with her brother and sister at her side. Donna was deeply loved as a daughter, sister, aunt, niece, lifetime companion and dear friend.
She was born Feb. 14, 1954, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Frederick L. “Bud” and Mary C. Umbaugh.
Donna was the second of four children. Donna graduated from Mount Vernon High School/Joint Vocational School in 1971 and worked for over 30 years in the healthcare field as an STNA at Martin Memorial Hospital, in California, and most recently for more than 15 years at Country Court. She had a strong work ethic, adored caring for elder patients and enjoyed helping her co-workers. Donna was a gentle person; she was kind and caring. She also had an inner strength that was evident by her fierce sense of independence. Relationships with family and friends were very important to her. She loved her family above all else and shared a strong bond with her nephews and niece. She was looking forward to her upcoming role as a “great aunt.” As adult siblings Donna, Steve and Kathy were very fortunate to be able to share many happy times, face challenges together and perhaps most importantly, to be the best of friends.
Ralph Gary Dement was Donna’s companion for more than 35 years. He was truly the “love of her life.” She treasured her closest friend of many years, Susan Davis (and family), and her dear friend, Ruth Davis. Susan and Ruth were a constant source of support to the family during Donna’s illness. Donna enjoyed the simple things in life; beaches, water and the sun (of course); trips to casinos, spending time with her family and friends, shopping, and playing cards or having potluck dinners with “the girls” at her apartment complex. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
“Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted,” Matthew 5:4.
Donna is survived by her brother, Steven L. (La Donna) Umbaugh of Dayton; sister, Kathy (Grant) Coon of Howard; nephew and niece, Chris and Candice Umbaugh, both of Dayton; and nephews, Trevor and Kyle Coon, both of Howard. Also surviving are her uncle, Jim (Jean) Umbaugh of Granville; aunts, Patricia (Marvin) McQuigg of Fredericktown and Patsy (Edmund) Ford of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; former sister-in-law, Susan Bunn; stepsisters, Darlene, Debbie, Diane, Laura and their families; dearest friends, Susan Davis and Ruth Davis; and many, many cousins.
Family members passing from this life before Donna, include her lifetime companion, Ralph Gary Dement; parents, “Bud” and Mary C. Umbaugh; stepmother, Irma W. Umbaugh; brother, Gary L. Umbaugh; nephew, Corey Umbaugh Coon; aunts, Helen (Dale) Yarman and Betty (Bob) Morrison; uncles, Bill (Mary Ann) Umbaugh, Edmund (Patsy) Ford; and cousin, Charles “Dick” Miller.
A graveside service and interment will be observed for family members in early spring at Mound View Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Ohio. Donna’s older brother, Gary, who passed away in 2010 in California, will also be interred to his final resting place next to his mother and sister at that time. A remembrance celebration for Donna will take place following the graveside service; family members and all friends are invited to come and share in fellowship and memories of Donna. The location, date and time of the graveside service and remembrance celebration will be published at a later date in the Obituary section of the Mount Vernon News.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to charities providing Palliative, Hospice, or Alzheimer’s related care.
