ORANGE PARK, Fla. — James William “Jim” Grandy, 78, died March 31, 2013, under the care of Hospice at the Moosehaven Retirement Center.
He was born Dec. 22, 1934, in Hocking, Ohio, and had lived at Moosehaven since July 26, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wives, Marjorie (40 years) and Betty Ann (14 years).
He is survived by a daughter, Tamara Lynn of Frazeysburg; two sons, John William (Renee) of Lexington and Thomas David (Penny) of Ashland; three stepchildren, Angela Dixon, Richard Davis and Maria Birchfield; three stepbrothers, James Rodney Hoffer of Haines City, Fla., Terry Lee Hoffer and David Allen Hoffer, both of Sandusky; four grandchildren, Carl Massey, Heather Massey, Jade Marie Grandy and Mitchell Vaughn Grandy; three stepgrandchildren, Rickie Davis, Karla Birchfield and Joseph Birchfield; two great-granddaughters, Faith and Dixie Massey; and a great-grandson, Xavier James Sawyer.
He was preceded in his death by his parents, Thomas Frederick Grandy and Gladys Helen Sherwood Grandy Hoffer.
He was a graduate of Newark High School (1952), and Ohio University (BA 1961, MA 1968).
Jim was a member of the Guerrant Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Ky. A retired teacher, coach and friend to many of his students, Jim had spent his career at Margaretta High School, Castalia, Ohio; Bucyrus High School; Lees College, Jackson, Ky.; and adjunct professor of English at Central Ohio Technical College, Mount Vernon Campus.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Galion Lodge 303, achieving the fraternity’s highest award, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. He was also a member of the Loudonville Post of the American Legion and a life member of the Mount Vernon VFW Post 4027, having served and attained the rank of Specialist 5th Class in the U.S. Army in North Carolina and in Heidelberg, Germany (USAEUR Headquarters G-3) for nearly five years.
A memorial service has been planned for Friday, April 19, at the Moosehaven Chapel in Orange Park, Fla., at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a memorial fund in his name at www.GrandyMemorial.org.Copyright The Associated Press.
