MOUNT VERNON — Helen L. Ewers McCoy, 91, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Fredericktown, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at The Laurels of Mount Vernon, following an extended illness.

Helen was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Richland County, to Clarence and Ethel (Spayde) Schonauer, and had spent most of her lifetime in the Fredericktown and Mount Vernon area. Helen was a graduate of Bellville High School Class of 1939 and was a member of the Palmyra Church of Christ.

Surviving are her daughter, Carole (Howard) Hughes of Fredericktown; son, Richard (Marilyn) Ewers of Fredericktown; son-in-law, Marvin Purdy of Fredericktown; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Max (Kathleen) Schonauer of Fredericktown and Gene Schonauer of Bellville; and sister, Maxine (Clifford) Hardin of Mansfield.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cassius Ewers Jr.; second husband, Walter McCoy; daughter, Judy Purdy; sisters, Eileen Lemley and Barbara Heaton Scott; and brother, Gary Schonauer.

Friends may call Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown, where a service celebrating the life of Helen L. Ewers McCoy will follow at 2 p.m., with her son-in-law, Howard Hughes, officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
