MOUNT VERNON — Gilbert O. Dickerson, 75, of Mount Vernon, passed away May 22, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family, after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 26, 1938, in New Lexington to Herman and Dorothy (Pargeon) Dickerson. He lived most of his life in Knox County. He was employed by Cooper-Bessemer in Mount Vernon for 39 years. After his retirement he worked part time landscaping for Essep Park and First-Knox National Bank. He was a 49 -year member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge. Gilbert enjoyed traveling to Florida in the winter and taking care of the fruit trees on his property. He also enjoyed landscaping and woodworking.

Gilbert is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary; one son, Chris Dickerson of Fredericktown; stepson, Jeff (Teresa) Hawkins of Gambier; stepdaughters, Cynthia Pendleton of Mount Vernon, Linda (Lester) Grennell of Utica, Brenda Layton of Howard; daughters-in-law, Lois Dickerson of Fredericktown and Mary Beth Dickerson of Bladensburg; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one loving brother, Leonard (Dottie) Dickerson of Gambier; and one loving sister, Betty Steinmetz of Mount Vernon.

Gilbert was preceded in death by parents; two sons, Gilbert Dickerson Jr. and Willard Dickerson; two sisters, Dorothy “Cookie” Auker and Lenora Beckley; a brother, Gary Dickerson; and a great-granddaughter, Marice Paige Burwell.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m., with Evangelist Dave Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
