MOUNT VERNON — Bert W. Grindstaff, 85, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, at The Ohio Eastern Star Home.
He was born Nov. 3, 1927, in Wise County, Va., to Stanley and Lina (White) Grindstaff. Bert was a foreman at Chattanooga Glass, formerly Lamb Glass. He attended the Gambier Epworth United Methodist Church and was a member of the Moose Lodge of Mount Vernon. Bert is a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques, golf and most of all he enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren.
Bert is survived by two sons, Ted (Brenda) Grindstaff of Heath, Terry (Wendy) Grindstaff of Worthington; two daughters, Sharon (Randy) Tharp of Mount Vernon, Susan (Alan) Sigler of West Chester; 11 grandchildren, Chad, Melissa, Sara, Megan, Amanda, Eric, David, Alaina, Jennifer, Leisha and Daniel; three great-grandchildren, Reid, Claire and Anderson; two brothers, Orville (Eula) Grindstaff of Elizabethton, Tenn., and J.D. (Mary) Grindstaff of Elizabethton, Tenn.; six sisters, Nadine (Harold) Fisher of Morganton, N.C., Anna Ruth (Odell) Breland of Cope, N.C., Mary Nell (Bill) Greer of Johnson City, Tenn., Erma (Jack) Barker of Elizabethton, Tenn., Della (Floyd) Nettles of St. George, S.C., and Judy (Ray) Scholl of Sugar Grove, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Thelma J. Grindstaff; one sister, Bernice Grindstaff; and one brother, Ernest Grindstaff.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at noon in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. William Greer officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
