MOUNT VERNON — Samuel Roberts Laudeman, Jr., 61, of Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Sam was born Feb. 24, 1952, in Elwood, Ind., to Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Giovanini) Laudeman Sr. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind., in 1970. Sam met his bride, Ann (Kahrl) Laudeman, while both were attending DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where he joined Delta Tau Delta. Sam transferred to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he majored in English.
Sam and Ann were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon on March 8, 1975. They lived and worked in Indianapolis before moving to Mount Vernon in late 1976. Sam joined Ann’s father as an insurance agent at Kahrl & Company Insurance, where he became vice president and co-owner. Sam and Ann’s daughter, Elizabeth, was born in Mount Vernon in 1981, followed by John in 1983 and Nicholas in 1987.
Sam served the Mount Vernon community through various associations. He was a member of the Jaycees and president of the local Rotary International. He served as chairman of the Knox County United Way Campaign. He was a local and regional leader for the Boy Scouts of America including Scoutmaster for Troop 339 and president of the Muskingum Valley Council. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and earned the wood badge for his service to the Boy Scouts. He attended countless MVHS sporting events and served as president of the Mount Vernon City School Board. He belonged to The Old Homestead Club and was a member of the local Freemasons. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and Senior Warden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He loved the community and the opportunities he had to contribute.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Ann (Kahrl) Laudeman; father, Samuel (Marla) Roberts Laudeman Sr. of Elwood, Ind.; brother, John (Virginia) Laudeman of Lebanon, Tenn.; children, Elizabeth (Kulu) Moyo of Columbus, John (Sara) Laudeman of Columbus, Nicholas Laudeman of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Walter Laudeman and Emma Moyo.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Laudeman.
Friends may call Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 100 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Father David Kendall-Sperry will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
