MOUNT VERNON — Jay E. Morris, 75, of New Delaware Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the Columbus Colony Elderly Care in Westerville, Ohio.

He was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Sullivan, Ohio, to the late Virgil and Catherine (Swoope) Morris. Jay was a graduate of Danville High School. He owned and operated J. Morris Excavating and was co-owner with his late wife, Barbara (O’Brien) Morris of Barb’s Diner in Mount Vernon. Jay was a member of C.O.R.K.S. of Centerburg and the Mount Vernon Knox County RC Flying Club.

He is survived by his children, Teresa (Patrick) Brate of Walhonding, Randy (Denise) Morris of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Ronnie (Patty) Morris of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Betty (Larry) Lauderbaugh of Danville and Peggy Morris of Bladensburg; a brother, Harold (Vicki) Morris of Danville; and special friend and companion, Linda Gates. Thank you for the short but special time.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (O’Brien) Morris.

Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Rev. Paul Dove will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
