MOUNT VERNON — Gerald L. “Gary” Donaldson, 65, of Hilltop Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Country Court Nursing Home.

He was born July 20, 1947, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to the late Dwight “Dutch” and Evelyn (Bond) Donaldson. Gary served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and received the National Defense Service and Vietnam Service Medals. He was a 1965 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, and worked at National City Bank and State Farm Insurance in Mount Vernon.

Gary was an active member of the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, Mount Zion Lodge 9 F&AM, and past member of Kiwanis, Rotary and Utica Sertoma. He was a board member and coach of the Knox County Colt Football League and served on the City of Mount Vernon Recreational Board.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue (Doup) Donaldson; his children, Amy Lee Donaldson of Mount Vernon and Bryan (Melissa) Donaldson of Mount Vernon; a grandson, Garrett Donaldson; two sisters, Cheryl (Larry) Schaffer of Mansfield and Kaila (Greg) Talbott of Mount Vernon; and his canine companion, Willow.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Warren Outhwaite officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions in Gary’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Mulberry Street United Methodist Church.
