MOUNT VERNON — Christiene Garner Hickerson, 78, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

Christiene was born Feb. 24, 1935, in Greenup County, Ky. She graduated from Claridon High School in Marion County and had been a resident of Mount Vernon since 1952. Christiene had been employed by the Mount Vernon City Schools, the Heart of Ohio Girl Scouts and Knox County Head Start. She was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are her husband, William “Bill” Hickerson, whom she married June 1, 1952; her children, Deborah (Larry) Suggs of Lima, Ohio, Peggy Hickerson of Huntsville, Ala., Dr. Timothy (Donna) Hickerson of Springfield, Ohio, and Terry Hickerson of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Christopher Suggs, Kara Miller, Matthew Hickerson, Clay Hickerson, Rachel Sandoval and Hannah Durham; great-grandchildren, Aubree Suggs, Mia Suggs, Brynn Miller, Derek Miller, Gavin Miller, Elliott Hickerson, and a great-grandson on the way; her sister, Wilma (Jim) Phillips of Huntsville, Ala.; brothers, Dick (Jan) Garner of Franklin, Tenn., Dan (Jeanne) Garner of Columbia, Md., and Don (Peggy) Garner of Nashville, Tenn.; and her aunts, Rosalie Brown of Lloyd, Ky., and Cleo Midgett of Abingdon, Va. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lola (McGlone) Garner; her stepfather, M.E. “Jack” Garner; and her father, William Floyd Crabtree.

Friends may call Monday from noon until 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050. A service celebrating the life of Christiene Garner Hickerson will follow at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Rick Tincher officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove Cemetery near Gambier, Ohio.
