GAMBIER — Betty Svoboda, 91, of Gambier, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at The Laurels of Mount Vernon.

She was born April 13, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo., to J. Lewis and Lois (Chase) Ward. She was a member of the Navy’s WAVES Division in WWII; and a lifelong active Episcopalian and volunteer. She was also the great-great-great granddaughter of Kenyon founder Philander Chase.

Betty is survived by her children, Helen Svoboda-Barber, Alan Svoboda, Joyce Svoboda, Janet Svoboda and Margaret Thorp, as well as seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Svoboda MD; and son, Donald Svoboda.

Funeral services for Betty will be held in Kansas at a later date.

The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon handled the arrangements for the Svoboda family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harcourt Parish Episcopal Church.
