MOUNT VERNON — Raymond Lee Parker, 82, of Longitude Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 2, 1931, in Mount Vernon, to the late Holland Orlando and Iva (Doup) Parker. Raymond graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1949 and Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1952. After high school he worked at Lamb Glass before entering the U.S. Air Force.
Raymond met Dorothy Moore when he came to First Knox National Bank to cash his paycheck from Lamb Glass. They were soon a couple and Dorothy married Raymond on Dec. 21, 1952, at the Howard United Methodist Church. They spent Christmas with their families then moved to Shreveport, La., for Raymond to finish his service in the U.S. Air Force.
Raymond served four years in the U.S. Air Force from Oct. 8, 1951, and was honorably discharged Oct. 7, 1955. He was stationed at Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, La.
He was employed by the Mount Vernon Post Office as a mail carrier and clerk, retiring in 1993 after 35 years. After retirement, he worked as a courier for First Knox National Bank. He also served the Board of Elections as an election poll worker for 12 years.
He was a member of Faith Baptist Church where he faithfully attended Men’s Fellowship, Forever Fellowship Sunday School Class, and Agape small group. Raymond served as deacon, usher, greeter, and enjoyed landscaping at the church with Dorothy.
Raymond enjoyed outside work: raising a garden, taking care of his roses, picking blackberries and black raspberries, mowing the yard, and landscaping. Kaitlyn and Nathan loved riding the tractor with grandpa while he mowed. He also loved to wash cars and his truck. Dorothy and Raymond loved to travel with both family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, of over 61 years, Dorothy (Moore) Parker; his daughter, Kathy (Michael) Hathaway; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Nathan Hathaway; sisters-in-law, Joann Parker, Jody Moore and Wanda Moore; nieces and nephews, Joan Lusby, Beverly (Max) Waddell, Pat Parker and Gage and Acie, John (Norma) Parker, Patty (Jaime) Fry and Jaxon, Steve (Barb) Moore, Marty (Lacie) Moore and Croix and Alexei, Marney (Jason) Moore, Bethanne (Jeff) Fowler, and Anita (Derk) Demaree and Grant.
Besides his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brothers, Acie Parker, John Parker, and Arthur Parker; his sister; Coretta Stewart; his nephew, Bill Parker; brothers-in-law, Carl “Pete” Moore, Tom Moore and Russell Stewart; and sister-in-law, Mary Parker.
Friends may call Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Doug Forsythe officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veteran’s Council will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
