Each of the services is free, but some form of user registration is required.

Here's a brief description of each of the services, information on how to use them and links you can follow to sign up and find out more about the sites:

del.icio.us

At its most basic level, del.icio.us allows users to save their bookmarks online.

Del.icio.us also gives users the ability to "tag" their bookmarks with descriptive category names.

As members of a "social bookmarking" community, del.icio.us sers can also see how many other people have bookmarked the same pages, and they can look at those users' bookmark collections to find other interesting online content.

NewsVine

At Newsvine, you can read stories from established media organizations like the Associated Press, ESPN, and New Scientist as well as individual contributors from all around the world. Placement of stories is determined by a multitude of factors including freshness, popularity, and reputation. Contribution is open to all, and editorial judgement is in the hands of the community.

Links and stories are adding by "seeding."

Digg

On Digg, users share intersting online content by submitting links to the site. At that point, the Digg audience can vote on whether or not they think it is interesting. Articles with lots of votes, or "diggs," rise up higher on the site's main page and topical subsection pages.

Another form of social sharing, this site also lets users categorize the content they are submitting to Digg and label it with descriptions of up to 350 characters. Digg users can also submit comments on each content item submitted to the site.

reddit

Reddit allows users to submit news articles and other online content to the site. Users also give articles a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Reddit then uses those votes to build a user profile and to find articles to recommend to you. Users can also submit comments on items posted to the site.

Google

If you are a registered user of Google's personalized homepage, e-mail and other services, you can also save bookmarks and label them with keywords.

Yahoo!

Users of Yahoo's "MyYahoo" feature can save bookmarks to their personal page, tag them with keywords, and share them with other Yahoo users.

Technorati

Technorati is the recognized authority on what's happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. We search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”

Facebook

Facebook is made up of many networks - individual schools, companies or regions. To join Facebook, people can authenticate into a school or work network, or they can join a regional network. They can then create profiles to connect with friends, share interests, join groups, send messages, writes notes and post photos.

If you are a registered user of Facebook, you can also "share" news stories on your profile page.
