Jackets edge Redskins for Utica title

The Mount Vernon High School wrestling team, led by a quintet of individual first-place finishers, edged Utica, 286-260, to capture the team victory at the 30th Annual Utica Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.


Deer season has good harvest

Warm weather is generally not a friend of deer hunters, but the 2006-07 deer season has been quite fruitful, despite the warmer temperatures early on. Knox County hunters have taken nearly the same number of deer thus far this season as they did last year. The season came in at the beginning of October, and will run through Feb. 4.


Burnin' Daylight

MOUNT VERNON -- Winter is somewhat of an odd season for students in Mount Vernon. During the summer, they are off school and have many daylight hours to use playing outdoor sports, hanging out by the pool or even tending to the lawn for their parents. Couple the shortening of the daytime hours with the rigors of school work, finding recreational opportunities in Mount Vernon is a bit of a challenge.


Reynoldsburg wins duel with Jackets

Up against the 10th-ranked team in the state and an Ohio Capital Conference powerhouse, the Mount Vernon High School wrestling team struggled at home in a duel meet against the Reynoldsburg Raiders. Jackets head coach John Brown says his team still has a lot of improvement to make, but showed some positive performances. The Raiders powered over the Jackets in Saturday night’s match, 67-8.


Yellow Jackets topple Celtics

Things started out slow for the Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team on Friday night as it hosted the Dublin Jerome Celtics in Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division play. The Yellow Jackets, who trailed 12-6 after won quarter, used solid free-throw shooting and aggressive play to pull out a 48-33 victory. Mount Vernon went 17-of-22 from the line, including six free throws made each by Kyle Clinedinst and Caleb Tier.

Bagworms infesting Knox County trees

Bagworm infestation has been encroaching into Knox County over the last couple of years and now seems to be firmly entrenched. Bagworm generally attacks arborvitae, juniper, pine, spruce and several other evergreen species. It has also been known to attack certain deciduous trees such as black locust, honeylocust and sycamore.


Menu Foods still recalling pet food

MOUNT VERNON -- A total of 60 million cans and pouches of Menu Foodspet food was recalled last week due to the confirmed deaths of 17 cats and dogs. The mystery is over as to the cause of the multiple deaths and illnesses -- rat poison, suspected on a wheat shipment from China, is to blame. But that is not much consolation to pet owners.


Barry receives Rudin Award from HCA

MOUNT VERNON -- Barbara Barry received the Heritage Centre Associations Walter Rudin Award Tuesday. She was among several winners at the HCA annual awards dinner, an event in which the association celebrates the contributions of its members.


No problems reported locally in pet food scare

MOUNT VERNON -- The nationwide scare of dog and cat food that has contributed to the death of pets apparently has not filtered down to Knox County. Veterinarians in Mount Vernon say they dont know what the problems are, and none have had pets in their offices with the symptoms.


Duo leads Senior-Stars to win

MOUNT VERNON -- Fredericktowns Shawn Johnson and Mount Vernon Academys Ryan McFadden led the Senior-Stars to a 75-71 win over the All-Stars in Tuesday nights Mount Vernon News All-Star Senior Showcase game. Swimming to help out

Tori Carpenter has been participating in the Swim for Diabetes for four years. The swim began Sunday at 1 p.m. and ran until 4 p.m. By about 2 p.m., Tori had done 51 laps. There were 21 swimmers overall and they raised $7,200.


MVs Newton identified as body found in Kokosing

The body found in the Kokosing river on Wednesday morning has been identified as 51-year-old James L. Newton of Mount Vernon, according to Mount Vernon police.

Keith Hess of Mount Vernon bagged this 17-pound turkey early this morning. Hess measured a 10-inch beard and seven-eighths of an inch spurs on the turkey, which he shot while hunting on Zion Road near Gambier. Hess said he planned to have it mounted. The spring season, which began Monday, runs through May 20.

Support group helps cancer survivors

MOUNT VERNON -- In a county rocked by breast cancer diagnoses, a support group was badly needed. When breast cancer survivor Ruth Treen was diagnosed and endured a mastectomy, she decided to do something about that.


Mammogram detected cancer early

MOUNT VERNON -- Saunja Smith did not find a lump in her breast, nor did she notice any signs of cancer. And breast cancer doesn't run in her family. There was no real reason for Smith to get a mammography screening, except that doctors recommend the test after age 40. Smith was 43 years old and her mammogram, in May 2004, was just another routine checkup.


Several generations of family deal with cancer

MOUNT VERNON -- Cancer comes out of nowhere, or so it often seems. And for Ruth Treen of Mount Vernon and her family, that was certainly the case. In 2003, Treen's great-granddaughter, Alaina Littleton, 13 months old, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.


Fredericktown students do their part

FREDERICKTOWN -- The 95 kindergartners at Fredericktown Primary School participated in the school's fifth annual Mini Relay for Life on Friday, running and walking and expecting to raise more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Smoking ban effecting local businesses

MOUNT VERNON -- By 58 percent, Ohio voters approved a law in November 2006 to ban indoor smoking in public places. The ban took effect Dec. 7, but because there was not any way to enforce the new law, some restaurants and bars continued to let people smoke inside. Now the smoking ban has consequences.

Questions raised on HPV vaccine

Gardasil, a vaccine manufactured by Merck amd Co. Inc., is designed to prevent the human papillomavirus, HPV, which causes cervical cancer. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine, administered in a three-dose series, in June 2006. Since then, there has been some questions raised by parents on the recommended age the vaccine is administered -- as young as 9 and up to 26 years old.

Special unit used in drug raid

MOUNT VERNON -- The Mount Vernon Police Department's elite Emergency Services Unit deployed for the first time Friday in a raid at the Curtis Inn in downtown Mount Vernon. Blue Uriah Bain, 29, a guest at the hotel, was taken into custody and transported to the Knox County Jail, where he will be charged with trafficking in controlled substances.

MOUNT VERNON -- Alzheimer's disease is just one member of the family of dementia types but is, by far, the most common type in the United States. It accounts for about 60 percent of all dementia cases in patients 65 and older, and is associated with 100,000deaths each year. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that more than 5 million Americans suffer from the disease.


MV Amateur Radio Club participates in Field Day

MOUNT VERNON -- Until recently, garlic scapes were considered a "wasted"part of the garlic plant. The scape is the flowering stalk found on members of the Allium family (onions, leeks, chives and garlic). Garlic scapes, which only appear on hardneck garlic varieties, curl upward as they grow, ultimately straighten, and then grow little seed-like bulbs. The garlic scapes are at their tenderest and best flavor while they are still in full curl.

Locally, the Franklin County Sheriff's office is investigating the death of Patrick Hagans, 42, of Columbus. He was tasered by officers on May 13 and died three days later.


Two victims rescued from burning house

MOUNT VERNON -- Two men were trapped in a structure fire that ravaged a home at 503 W. Burgess St. Thursday night. It took the joint effort of the Mount Vernon police and fire departments to rescue the victims. Patrolman Jessica Butler and Cpl. Beth Marti of the MVPD and Jay Laymon of the MVFD entered the burning house to pull out the two victims.

Animal control officers investigate complaint about farmer's cattle

CENTERBURG -- Knox County officials assembled Wednesday afternoon to investigate a neighbor's complaint about the condition of cattle kept at the property of David Vernon, located at the southeast corner of Ball Road and Hall Road in Hilliar Township, along the Morrow County line. Veterinarian Dr. Greg Price was on hand for the inspection, as was Knox County Dog Warden Roger Reed. No citation was issued, as the officials determined that the condition of Vernon's herd could be attributed to the recent dry conditions. Reed gave no comment at the scene, and could not be reached for comment later.
