Sleep Over At The Fair
Showing an animal at the fair is a lot of work. Many 4H Club members beging their day at dawn and aren't finished until long after the last light on the midway is turned off. For many it hardly pays to head home for the day so many of them just bunk down for the night in the barns. It's a good way to get a good jump on the day.
Dairy animals purchased
MOUNT VERNON -- Calling them the finest young livestock exhibitors in the state, auctioneer Red Shaw's voice rang out in the crowded multipurpose building Thursday during the 2008 Knox County Junior Fair Sale of Champions.
Prosser, Tharp top showmen
MOUNT VERNON -- Cory Prosser was named Showman of Showmen in the large animal class and Anevin Tharp captured the Showman of Showmen award for the class of small animals during competition Wednesday night. Coming in second place in the large animal category was Thad Tuggle; second place in the small animal category was Lauren Harvey.
Lutwick takes harness charity race
MOUNT VERNON -- Eighty-four degrees and sunny were the conditions for Sunday's harness racing during the first day of the Knox County Fair. Little breeze and no rain led to fast times, tough competition and a nearly packed grandstand.
Ag museum opens new wing
MOUNT VERNON -- It's one thing to have insights into the rich and complex past of an agrarian community, it's quite another thing to be able to pass those insights along to others. The Knox County Agricultural Museum has had the insights in the form of a trove of displays which speak volumes about the history of life in Knox County over the last 200 years.
Celebrity lineup set for charity harness race
MOUNT VERNON -- Five local celebrities will take the harness reins on Sunday to raise money for their favorite charities as well as to help promote the sport of harness racing. To help prepare for the event, which will be held at the Knox County Fairgrounds, drivers were given the opportunity to practice earlier this week to get acquainted with the feel of the reins, the strength of the horse and the intensity of the competition.

Equine Assisted Therapy is an non-profit organization dedicated to serving people with disabilities through equestrian activities.
West pretty wild in Buffalo Bill show
MOUNT VERNON -- There were pioneers, Indians, horses, cowboys, Civil War soldiers and Western heroes in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show re-enactment Saturday afternoon. The show was at the Knox County Horse Park on Thayer Road, southwest of Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon's Parks and Recreation Department offer several programs throughout the summer to keep the city's youth active in our city's many parks.

Friday's weather was very uncooperative for the Heritage Centre Associations first annual skateboard, BMX, and inline skate contest but that didn't keep competitors from drying things off in hopes getting things started.
Summer programs at public library
MOUNT VERNON -- The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County offers fun-filled activities for youth throughout the summer. Catch the Reading Bug is the name of this year's program that encourages the youth to enjoy reading all summer long. In addition to reading, games, crafts and special guests are all part of the summer fun.
