WATERVILLE — William Edward Gilbert, 87, of Waterville, Ohio, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at his home. Bill was born in Danville, to the late William and Viola Gilbert. Besides his parents, Bill was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Gilbert; and sisters, Mary Ellen, Louise and Doris.

Bill is survived by his two sons, Richard (Kathy) Gilbert of Lubbock, Texas, and Steven (Nancy) of Tiffin; sister, Dorothy; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and friend, Jeannette.

Bill was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army where he served in Europe. During Bill’s enlistment, he received many medals including the Purple Heart. He was a member of Alva N. Siddle American Legion Post 232 and St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was a founding member of Heatherdowns Park Baseball League where he coached baseball, he also coached football at St. Patrick’s of Heatherdowns. Bill was always outgoing and he never met a stranger. He loved to watch the Detroit Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes. He especially loved his family and his horses.

Friends and family will be received at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 14010 Old US 24, Grand Rapids, Ohio, on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the funeral mass at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio.
