MOUNT VERNON — Richard Wendell Jones, 75, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, to be with his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 10, 1939, to Percy Day Jones and Eva Frances (Maronel) Jones in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

He graduated from Trott Vocational School in 1956 and joined the Air Force, serving three years at Andrews Air Force Base and one year on Iwo Jima. He graduated from Eastern Nazarene University in 1966 and The Johns Hopkins University in 1973 with a PhD in Chemistry.

He and his family moved to Mount Vernon in 1972 where he was a chemistry professor at Mount Vernon Nazarene College for 25 years, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene where he served on the church board, was church treasurer, and taught the college age Sunday school class.

He was an avid reader of Henri Nouwen and enjoyed philosophical conversations with his colleagues.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Pat, of 45 years; his sons, Mark (RaJeanda) Jones of Newburgh, Ind., David Jones, and daughter Alison (Jonathan) Morris of Castalia, Ohio; grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, and Jack Jones, and Levi and Cole Morris; a sister, Jean Crawford of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.

In lieu of a funeral, a memorial service will be held on a future date to be announced.
